Samba 2.0.3 won't start after update from 1.9.18p10

Samba 2.0.3 won't start after update from 1.9.18p10

Post by Hans Erik Ouwehan » Tue, 27 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I have this problem with Samba. It won't start. I've updated it like described: (after unpacking with tar I did: "./configure";"make" and "make install")

Everything went well in my opinion.

But...., when I reboot my system Samba 2.0.3 will not show up. Only the old Samba does.

I had a complete Samba system running before I updated.

So, whats the problem here. Can anyone help me?

Hallo Erik,
check your Makefile. The path used in the default was different to my
installed Samba. (SuSE 6.0)
I changed the entrys for
prefix=/usr
BASEDIR=/usr
SBINDIR=${exec_prefix}/sbin
LIBDIR=/etc
VARDIR=/var
PRIVATEDIR=/etc
SWATDIR=/usr/swat
LOCKDIR=/var/lock
Then I called make and make install. After restarting the damon everything
works fine with my
Distribution.

Jochen

Have a lot of fun ...

I've also just installed Samba 2.0.3 First I had problems too, but then I uninstalled the first samba, and installed Samba 2.0.3 Then everything went fine. (I used the rpm file)

I'd say the problem is that you are running RH, and the previous version
of samba was supplied by RH and as the normal RH way of installing stuff
is, it's not located where anyone would expect it to be, and therefore
"make install" won't overwrite it. You have to either a) manually edit
your rc.d -scripts to start samba from the correct place, b) configure
samba makefiles so that it installs to RH-like -directories or c) use the
samba rpm provided by RH.

1. Problems with Samba 1.9.18p10 & AIX 4.2

I'm having problems with a PC application running from an AIX/Samba
server.

The PC application (Symantec Visual Cafe) thinks that files on the samba
server have been changed by another application (no others running).
Cafe seems to figure out that the file has been changed by another
application by checking the last modified time on the file (not
unreasonable).

The problem is that the mtime of the file *is* changing - the PC
application is not doing any updates to the file.

Further investigation shows that Linux with the same samba version does
not update the mtime of a file.

I'm begining to suspect that AIX updates the mtime when it shouldn't -
one thought is when the file is locked.  ie. the PC application opens
the file and takes a note of the mtime.  Samba locks this file.  AIX
updates the mtime.  PC application screems that something has updated
this file.

Any one else come across this behavior.  Are there any fixes (AIX or
Samba) ?

Many thanks,

Peter
