sendmail:host name lookup fails

Post by jo.. » Sat, 28 Oct 2000 04:44:56

I have RedHat6.1, with sendmail 8.9 in default configuration, on two
boxes networked.  I name the boxes 'ivan.sivakalpa.net' and
'linus.sivakalpa.net', private network, not using sendmail for external mail
(use netscape for that), when online uses ipmasq and ipchains.

I can send mail local on one box, no problem.  If I try to send from

failure".  Do I need to set some config options via sendmail.mc?  Or, is
there something else needed in resolver files? I'm not running named, and
resolver files are as shown below.

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost
192.168.1.1     ivan.sivakalpa.net      ivan    # K6-2/300

192.168.1.3     linus.sivakalpa.net     linus   # 233MMX

nameserver 204.156.128.1

Have you read the FAQ at www.sendmail.org? Specifically
http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section3.html#3.22

I believe it addresses your situation. i.e. No DNS server.

Thanks, Steve, for the link.  I did a search from there for a more
easily understandable explanation of how to set up and use "service switch
file", that makes sendmail look at /etc/hosts. I also found a suggested
quick fix of using "mailertable", which I've implemented for the time being;
once I've read up enough on how to set up the service switch using m4, I'll
do that.

1. Sendmail 8.7.5 and Linux 2.0.20 (host name lookup failure)

Hi,

I'am Massimiliano Panichi. I have a problem
with my sendmail deamon. I have a private
LAN, with no access to Internet. When I try to
send an e-mail message to another user on
another host in the LAN, the deamon doesn't work.
It give me an error. HOST NAME LOOKUP FAILURE.

I don't understand this error message because the
computer have all the host information in the
local /etc/hosts file. It try a DNS server to lookup the name
and it don't receive answer because it doesn' t exist. After
this it should see in the /etc/hosts file to find the
IP address. I use Linux 2.0.20 and Sendmail 8.7.5.

Please help me!

Massimiliano
