Hostname Lookup Failure

Post by Stephen Palme » Tue, 24 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I just got connected to my new ISP with ppp. Now I'm getting a
"Hostname lookup failure" message. My resolv.conf has the domain name
and primary and secondary dns entries. I can ping the ISP no problem
but when I try to ftp anywhere else I can't get further than the ISP.

You need to issolate name resolving and routing problems.  Ping to
outside locations using the IP address, for example 206.151.146.4 should
get you to ns1.vh.net.  Then use the host command to check you name
serving.  If the ping by IP address fail you should investigate routing.
The host command failing would indicate a resolving.  In that case the
next level is nslookup or dig.

1. Hostname lookup failure

I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.  When I try to run
dip, it comes back with a message '<machine name>: Hostname look up
failure.'  I found out that when I type hostname it returns the name of
my machine...but when I type hostname -f it returns that error message.
What's going on?

Plus...has anyone had problems in Xwindows that cause the monitor to
randomly degauss itself?  I am running X on an AMD DX/2 80 with a
Hercules Dynamite Power VLB 2MB and a Tatung CM15VDE monitor.  When X
starts up, it pulls up a screen that is too large for the actual monitor
screen so the mouse moves off the screen on the right side and the
bottom.  This is not from virtual windows.  But I think that this may be
why my monitor is degaussing itself.  Someone wrote back to me and told
me to look at the config files for the XF86_W32.  He said that the
defaults for this server use the extra memory to make the screen a
little larger.  I am not sure what I am supposed to do to fix this
though.  Any help is appreciated.
