newbie cannot get on net

Post by - Jaco » Sun, 29 Dec 2002 15:58:23

Sometimes i get to connect with my Mandrake 9 box, and other times not.
Almost all of the time i get "connected" to the net, but can't do anything.
KPPP dials and docks to the panel. When i click on details, it shows me
that i have a local and remote ip.It also shows some minimal bites sent
and received.
Problem is i can't open any pages or connect to mail server.
Problem with DNS?

But then, other times it work  - usually i have to open up Mandrake
Control Center > Connection, and set up my LAN and modem with the
wizard, and when they ask to test the connection, i do that.
Maybe this is just by chance.

Tried a few times again this morning. The one time i got connected after
doing the wizard thing, the wizard gave me the following message:

Problems occured during configuration.
Test your connection via net_monitor or mc. If your connection doesn't work,
you might want to relaunch the configuration.

I could still open pages, so i didn't mind.
Later when i tried to open a new page, konqueror gave me:

An error occured while loading http://www.justlinux.com/:
Unknown host www.justlinux.com

So i disconnected and ran the wizard again.
It appeared to "connect" again, but this time i received the following
from the wizard, and wasn't able to do anything:

The system doesn't seem to be connected to internet.
Try to reconfigure your connection.

I use the ip of 131.107.2.2 with subnet of 255.255.0.0.
I configured my DNS and gateway as 127.0.0.1 in the wizard.

Thanx allot

Well, my friend, to try to  configure networking on Linux by the trial
and error 'method' and without having _any_ idea what happens could be
a big pain in the ass, really.

I think it could be better if you do your homework and read:

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/nag2/index.html

Then, if  with the new adquired  knowledge you are  still stucked with
the configuration, you could post your _specific_ problem here.

Yes, please read up a bit more as "Jhair" mentioned, but a quick
pointer: you need to add the appropriate DNS provided by your ISP, and
not 127.0.0.1.  127.0.0.1 is logically *your* machine.

Unless of course you have you box configured as a cacheing DNS, which
though not difficult is probably not what you have done.  But IF you
did, then localhost is ok as a nameserver.
