net-pf-4 & net-pf-5 when booting system ...

Post by Bret » Wed, 12 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hi

I just finished re-compiling my kernel to 2.0.35. Everything works great
except that I get some sort of error message about net-pf-4 (IPX) &
net-pf-5 (Appletalk) when the system boots up.My boss keeps hounding me to
get rid of it (bit of a perfectionist)

When i do a "modprobe -c" i see them listed as "aliases" but i don't know
where modprobe finds this file ??? I tried /etc/conf.modules &
/lib/modules/2.0.35/modules.dep but no luck

Any ideas how i can stop the system from trying to load these two modules
???

Many thanks
Brett

Make a file '/etc/conf.modules' with the lines

alias net-pf-4 off # no ipx module
alias net-pf-5 off # no appletalk module

in it.

See http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/faq-details.phtml?id=152

Shortly:

"Edit your /etc/conf.modules file to include the following (2) lines:

  alias net-pf-4 off
  alias net-pf-5 off

This will remove any error messages that appear during the boot process."

Jussi

1. ?Got "net-pf-4", "net-pf-5" not found, while booting

Hi,

when booting i get "net-pf-4", "net-pf-5" not found. It's while
doing the first "ifconfig" in the /sbin/rc.d/boot, which is setting up
the "Dummy-Interface".

I'm running 2.0.25 with Network support into the kernel, ppp as module.
If I'm doing ifconfig _after_ booting, all works fine.
Is it perhaps because the kerneld do not run "full power" at
bootup-time?
If I link "IPX-protocl" into the kernel, "net-pf-5" vanishes, but not
"net-pf-4".
I recompiled the kernel with different features (which takes a while
on my 486-33-32MB,ISA) but I did'nt get rid of "net-pf-5"!!!

Please help!
