2nd NIC not quite working

2nd NIC not quite working

Post by Max Hanse » Fri, 20 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Oy, I see a lot of posts about 2nd NICs not working.  I get farther than
most of these people, but not far enough.

I'm using RH6.0, and have mostly used the graphical control panel to set
up my NICs.

eth0 uses module rtl8139.
eth1 uses module tulip.

Both kernel modules load okay.

I've set up eth0 as my gateway to the Internet through cable modem and
MediaOne.  That works.  eth1 is the problem.  I've set it up with a
class C address and mask.  It activates fine -- ifconfig shows it "up"
okay.  I can ping its IP address from within the machine, for what
that's worth.

When I ping the IP address on the Windows machine, on my hub the
activity lights belonging to eth1 and the Win NIC blink in sync.  Tells
me the hub is getting a clear enough message from eth1 to know where to
send it on to.  But no packets are ever returned.

When I ping eth1 from the Win machine, only one activity light blinks on
the hub -- the one belonging to the Win NIC, of course. The hub doesn't
know where eth1 is.

Suggestions much appreciated.

2nd NIC not quite working

Well, all things are easier if you get 2 NIC's the same, and PCI rather
than ISA.

Tell us what netstat -r returns on your box. It should look like:

#root: > netstat -r
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway     Genmask         Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface
11.11.111.0     *           255.255.255.0   U      1500 0          0 eth0
192.168.1.0     *           255.255.255.0   U      1500 0          0 eth1
127.0.0.0       *           255.0.0.0       U      3584 0          0 lo

Then try

tail -30 /var/log/messages and look for messages like:

 ... kernel: IP fw-in deny eth0 ...

You have total control over which packet goes throught you firewall. You
maight as well ahve blocked everuthing.

As Thierry says, have a look at the routing. And make sure that you have
forwarding enabled.

1. ping 2nd NIC works, but not ftp or telnet

This has been driving me nuts:

I have os5.0.5a that originally had an Intel 100B NIC card in an Intel
OEM machine, dual Pentium 200mmx.  ping, telnet and ftp worked fine.

I added a second card, Intel 100+.  I intend to run dhcpc on the 100+
card, but after I installed my 100+ card, my 100B card stopped working.
From windoz, I can ping the 100B card, but telnet hangs and ftp just
says "connected to xxxx".

In addtion, when SCO boots, i get an error on S90atlas.  "...S90atlas
did not respond for 120 seconds..."  Or something like that.
I have removed both cards, added the orginal back in, nothing seems to
work.  I also ran scoadmin>system>verify system

in the GUI, I can not run "Internet configuration"  I get an error
about it unable to talk to 615...localhost...

I'm not sure what else to post, '/etc/tcp' so any guidance will be
appreciated.
