IRC and IRC Server

Post by Q » Sat, 11 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Hey all,

I just wanted to know if anyone has had experience in setting up an IRC
server and client..  If you have please mail me or just point me in the
right direction..  If you know of a package out there that does this nice
and simple, please let me know :)

Thankyou
Andrew

There are a few different types of IRC servers, but if your only concern is
local use and not connecting to any existing irc network, grap any IRC
server you wish.

The IRC server program is ircd (irc daemon). It can be found on
ftp.undernet.org (they have multiple types of servers, just grab one)

One good IRC client for Linux would be ircII. Available at www.irchelp.org
Again, there are multiple types of ircII (*X, EPIC..) but for use on a
local server, any version would be sufficient.

Installation of the irc daemon is quite easy, as long as you're not linking
to any net. After compiling it, just create an ircd.conf reading the
supplied "example.conf" file (skip any configuration lines which you don't
understand :) ), and boot it.

Then compile ircII, and have ircII connect to it (irc nickname localhost).

(If you don't run a nameserver, you might experience a delay when
establishing the connection)
