"connect from unknown" - why?!?

"connect from unknown" - why?!?

Post by Patrick Kl » Sat, 20 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I have Linux 1.2.13 running (very reliable for quite some time).  Every
so often when checking the "messages" log file, I see something like this:

Sep 19 14:24:58 linux in.pop3d[1113]: connect from unknown

(this happens with ftpd as well as with in.pop3d)

Why does it say "unknown"??  If nothing else, shouldn't it give me the
IP address of the host that is connecting?!?  I've searched for the
program that emits the "connect from ..." message into the log, but
I can't find it.  Does anyone know where this is coming from and/or how
I can make it display something more useful??
