PPP wierdness

Post by Frank W » Tue, 09 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Hi Gang,

I compiled installed linux 1.3.84 with PPP enabled.  When I type
pppd, I get the following error:

Sorry, PPP is not available for this system.

What's going on?  When I boot up, PPP looks like it's loading...

It means that either you are attempting to run pppd without it being suid
to root or that you are running the 2.1.2 version of pppd with the 1.3.84
kernel. Run the 2.2.0 package with the 1.3.84 kernel.

Hi,

You are probably not using the newest version of PPP (2.2.0e)
The kernel now loads ppp dynamically and the pppd has to be capable of
being loaded like that. Ergo if you are using an old version then
You get your error message!

You might have problems compiling the new package, well at least I do.
Have a look at my entry on Mon...

Peter

ME TOO!

Frank, would you be so kind as to forward me any replies you get? I
have the same problem with 1.3.84 and 1.3.91.

Note that "cat /proc/net/dev" does not show PPP.

1. Linux & PPP wierdness

Hi,

I work part-time at home developing software for my client.  I run Linux 2.0.18
from the Dec 96 Infomagic distribution.

I regularly dial up my ISP using PPP and connect through to my client.

I quite often get net strangeness happening.  I don't know who to pin the blame
on, but these are the symptoms:

1.  When I'm running talk in an X window, I can't see what the person I'm
talking to is typing until I enter a keystroke, and then everything that
    he's been typing suddenly appears.
2.  My telnet sessions to my client stop responding for minutes at a time.
If in the meantime I establish a new telnet session to my client, the new
sessions work fine, and then a while later, my other telnet sessions start
    working again.
Sometimes doing a traceroute on my client fixes the matter.
3.  When I'm doing large downloads from other sites, the download stops for a
period of time, but pinging the site I'm downloading from or doing a
traceroute on it causes the data to start coming again.

Any ideas for a solution?

Thanks
