Dialing into my Linux box

Dialing into my Linux box

Post by Stephen Y » Thu, 25 Apr 1996 04:00:00

How can I set my Linux box so that I could log onto it by calling the
attached modem? Ideally, when it answers, it would initiate a PPP
connection.

Please help...

Mgetty should do it better. The latest beta also does the PPP
connection automatically.

I just use the agetty and change /bin/bash to /etc/ppp/ppplogin in the
/etc/passwd file where ppplogin is the command pppd with my options.
It works fine.

Yeah, it's great. I also use the same setting and it works. But still I
cannot make the remote host access other host connected to the same
ethernet with the PPP server. Can anybody tell me how to fix it?

Thanks and Best regards,

Yeah, I know it would work, I've used it for months myself. The
advantage of using the latest mgetty beta is that you don't have to
login at all. Mgetty displays a login prompt (so a normal dial-in user
can login if (s)he wants) but keeps an eye out for incoming PPP data,
if it detects any it will automatically start pppd on the dialin host,
which can do the password authentication via PAP or CHAP.

The advantage of this approach is that it works transparently with
Windows 95 clients (dial up scripting is not needed) while still
allowing terminal logins and fax reception.

1. Dial in to Linux box, then dial out

Does anyone know of any good information on dialing into a Linux box?  I
read another post refering to a Linux Journal issue.  Also, if I can
dial into my machine, would it be possible to create a script that would
allow me to:

1.      Dial into the machine using a regular modem.
2.      Log in to the machine using BBS software or something else.
3.      Execute a script that would disconnect the current user (me).
4.      After disconnecting the current user, dial out again to my ISP.
5.      After connecting to the ISP, send me an email telling the new dynamic
IP address.

After the system has done all of this, then I would be able to TELNET to
my ISP mail server, get the IP address, and log on the my system over
the Internet, FTP to my machine or any of the basic TCP/IP commands.

Does this sound reasonable?  Also, has anyone got something like this to
work?  Any information will be helpful.

Thanks,

Zackary Tippett
