Linux client=>NT Server + MS Proxy server Question

Post by Shane Har » Tue, 11 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I need to connect my RH6.2 box to my dialup internet account via MS Proxy
Server on WinNT 4.  Anyone know if this can be done or is Proxy Server only
for Win clients?
Thanks

I just about got this working- set the linux gateway to the nt machine, and
you should be able to get web browsing, email and news to work. I had to set
up my mail/news servers as IP addresses though, as proxy server didn't seem
to process the DNS requests correctly for the Linux machine.

Checked gateway address and it's currently pointing to the NT server
correctly.
I wonder if maybe you have some other settings that I don't?
Hmm further investigation required I think - thanks for your idea James.

I've got the same problem .. I can ping the NT proxy server, and when I
enter the proxy settings in Netscape I get nothing, or refused connections.
So if you do get it figured out, please let me know.

Thanks,

Cheeby

Just had another look-
Nothing odd in the network settings, the NT machine is set as gateway like
you said. In Netscape, the server was set up as the http proxy and also as
the socks one... I can't remember why I did this, but I seem to remember
reading something that made me do it.Give it a try, and I will try and
remember the exact reason behind it...

Netscape is working fine - simple http proxy (same with ftp via Netscape) -
problem is mail and ftp.  Can't use Netscape for ftp as I can't login
properly (and I refuse to use a web browser for ftp)
Oh - cheeby if you're reading this turn off access permissions in Proxy
Server for the time being - at least until you get Samba happy and you
should be able to traverse the proxy okay.

For mail/ftpare you specifying servers by name or IP? I found I had to set
them by IP as Proxy Server didn't like the linux dns requsts... Think I said
that before actually. Never mind!

You probably need to get socks for your linux machine. Proxy server
requires
socks protocol for non passive ftp. Have you tried to fun your ftp
client in
passive mode? I discovered the socks issue, with Mac's trying to ftp
through
a MS Proxy Server. Ended up tossing NT and installing Linux,
masquerading (NAT)
on the internal interface and using the masq_ftp.o and othe masq modules
to
allow ftp, icq and other dual connection services. After installing the
linux
the customer is now happily exchanging data via Apple file sharing, ftp
and
Windows shares off the linux machine, and accessing the internet through
the
linux {firewall/proxy} server. You could also install the squid web/ftp
caching
proxy server daemon as well.

I believe I saw a socks 5 RPM somewhere, but have never tried it.

Good luck.

1. MS$ NT > Linux Firewall > Internet > MS$ NT PPTP Server

Please excuse the <seemingly> newbie question, but I have an issue.  I
would like the ability to manage my corporate network from home via PPTP
rather than 28.8k PPP.  I have a cable modem at home, with a Linux
router / firewall.  I'm unable to establish a PPTP connection through
the Linux box.  Below are the specs:

Linux Box:
    PII233 96MB RAM
    RH Linux 6.0, kernel 2.2.14
    IPCHAINS

NT Box:
    NT4 Wks SP5
    NIC / Modem
    PPTP client

I can connect via PPTP in any environment not including my Linux box,
and according to the documentation at the IP Masquerading Resource,
there's a kernel patch.  Unfortunately, I have had no luck finding the
patch for a 2.2.14 kernel.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan Underwood
