Help with Samba , please !

Post by Pavel Rot » Sat, 15 Nov 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to make my Linux box serve as a print server for 3 PCs in our
lab. I have install Samba 1.9 and can really use some help now:

the damned PC just won't print !

I can mount disks from them, can move files between them, they even see
the printer, they queue print jobs, but nothing happens. The only clue
that I have right now is:

11/14/97 12:37:06 netbios nameserver version 1.9.17p2 started
Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host hobbes.
Unable to get my hostname - exiting.
Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host hobbes.
Added interface ip= bcast= nmask=

Nov 14 12:48:42 hobbes inetd[63]: /usr/sbin/nmbd: exit status 0xff
Nov 14 12:49:13 hobbes last message repeated 30 times
Nov 14 12:49:21 hobbes last message repeated 8 times
Nov 14 12:49:22 hobbes inetd[63]: netbios-ns/udp server failing (looping),
service terminated

Unforyunately, I have no idea how to fix it. Please, help.

1. Need help with Samba, please

Well, I've tried and tried and tried and I must be missing something.
I'm trying to connect a Win98 machine with a Redhat V6.1 machine.
The name of the workgroup (in Win98) is WORKGROUP.
I have file and printer sharing in TCP/IP in Win98 disabled for
firewall reasons.
I can ping one machine from the other and vice-versa.
The IP address of the Win98 (proxy server) machine is
The IP address of the Linux machine is
I can connect to the internet using Netscape on the Linux machine
connecting  through the Win98 machinedial-up connection.
I want to be able to share files between both machines.
In effect, what I'm tring to do is set up the Linux machine as a web
server for my Win98 machine.
I can run Win98 in vmware on the linux machine and the Win98 machine
shows up in the Network Neighborhood but no the Linux machine.
I've disabled encrypted passwords in the registry on the Win98 machine
as well as the vmware-running Win98.
I've tried editing the smb.conf using a text editor, using gnosamba
I've tired connecting to the Win98 machine using LinNeighborhood.
So far, no luck.
If anyone can offer suggestions, make changes to the following
smf.conf, anything, I would GREATLY appreciate it!
