Webgear Aviator 2.4 and RH6.1 Linux

Post by Special » Sat, 04 Mar 2000 04:00:00

So, here's the deal.  I installed the webgear aviator 2.4 wireless
network card (and pcmcia / isa adapter) in my Red Hat 6.1 linux system.
After a few hours of configuration changes, I finally go the system to
accept the isa adapter and aviator 2.4 pcmcia card so that the lights on
the card come on.  In addition, cardmgr apparently can configure it
properly (at least it gives me two high pitched beeps when it runs).
However, I cannot get it to talk to my notebook computer no matter what
I do.  Here is the pertinent info that I obtained from the machine:

1.  ifconfig shows my wired NE2000 network card as eth0 (it works fine)
ifconfig shows the aviator 2.4 as eth1
        -  However, it only shows an IRQ setting (5 which is unused).
It shows no I/O setting...is this normal?

2.  According to all the FAQs and howto's I read, the listing given by
insmod is correct.  I'd list them, but I don't have access to the linux
machine at the moment.

3.  I bound the address 192.10.10.2 to the ne2000 card and 10.10.10.2 to
the webgear card.  Does the rest (Network, Broadcast, Subnet mask, etc.
really matter in a private network?)  I am willing to change all the IPs
if someone has a configuration that works well!

4.  Anything else you need to know, let me know!

Eventually, I want to set up a router to route packets among several
different sources including the wireless network, the wired network, a
dialin PPP server (will this just connect to one of the current
networks?), and a cable modem/ADSL.  I also need help in this area since
I really don't have any experience setting up linux routers.

But, first, I just want to get the webgear equipment working.

Any ideas you have are appreciated!

Can you post the last few lines of /var/log/messages after the card is
configured? Does one say starting network and the other say joining
network?

I hope you mistyped that here, these numbers don't make sense. Put one at
192.168.1.1 and the other at 192.168.1.2.

I had to use version 1.70 of the driver, the current stable one never
worked.

No mistake...just a trial.  The two addresses are legitimate IPs, so
they shoud have worked
regardless of how strange they look.  Besides, my original wired LAN
used the IP range
10.10.*.*, which is why the 192.10.10.2 thing happened.  I just quickly
changed the first
number so that it would be seen as two totally separate networks (class
A vs class C).  I
planned on setting up a router to route packets between the networks.
Regardless, I have
gone back and changed all the IPs to class C private IP's.  The wired
NE2000 card is not
192.168.1.1 and the wireless is 192.168.10.1.  It is still two separate
networks so a router is
still needed.

I really don't know what version of the ray_cs driver I am using.  I
only installed the newest
stable  pcmcia package which already had it with it.  Whichever version
came with the
pcmcia package is the one I'm using.  Maybe I'll have to upgrade.

Thanks!

I got the gear working fine with the 3.1.11 package (which again, I
assume uses 1.67), but since you're quoting speeds up to 180KBps, I
might have to try that driver v1.70!  Hopefully, it won't*things
up.  I'd hate to go through all that again!

Cheers,
Kevin

This was between two machines sitting on the same desk. I had about 20%
packet loss while wandering around in the yard behind my office testing. I
didn't do any speed tests but pings were approx 10-15 ms.
