PPP problems w. null modem link & Linux

Firstly, Thanks for reading this.

I'm new to PPP and reasonably new to Linux too.

I'm trying to get ppd running between 2 standalone linux pc's.
The remote server name is: babyben - linux 1.1.59
The local machine name is: jeff - linux 1.0.9

The version of ppd running is: 2.1.2
I'm using the Slackware distribution.

The machines are directly liked by a null modem cable. Using this cable for
connecting a normal terminal causes no problems. The serial cable is
connected to the second serial port.

I first start ppd on the remote server machine by typing at the  console of
the server machine: (I type this from tty1)

     ppd local passive :192.1.1.1
     # 129.1.1.1 is the IP number I want for jeff.

The console displays the following:
On tty1:
~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~
~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~
~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~
~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~
~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~~ }#~!}!}!}}2}!}$}% }%}&.~L}'}"}(}"&}.~

In my ppp logging file (when I had debugging switched on):
  Feb  2 21:09:55 babyben pppd[128]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0
Feb  2 21:09:55 babyben pppd[128]: set kernel debugging level to 0
  Feb  2 21:09:55 babyben pppd[128]: Using interface ppp0
  Feb  2 21:09:55 babyben pppd[128]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/tty1
  Feb  2 21:10:25 babyben pppd[128]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Then I start ppd on the local machine by typing at the console of the local
machine:

pppd noipdefault defaultroute local debug kdebug 2 /dev/cua1 9600

The result on the local machine is:

  jeff:/dev# Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[361]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: Using interface ppp0

Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: ioctl(set extended ACCM): Invalid argument
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: send_config: mtu = 1500
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: send_config: asyncmap = ffffffff
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: send_config: flags = 0
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: recv_config: mru = 1500
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: ioctl(PPPIOCSMRU): Invalid argument
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: recv_config: asyncmap = 0
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: ioctl(PPPIOCRASYNCMAP): Invalid argument
  Feb  2 21:44:09 jeff pppd[362]: Exit.

(I've since created the pid file, but the ioctl.... errors still occur.)

Nothing happens on the remote server.

What am I doing wrong. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks.
