Number Nine Virge 3D PCI video card

Post by Ted Wa » Sat, 26 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,

I have a "new" video card: Number Nine Virge 3D PCI and it gives me
headache when I was trying to install it.

Monitor: Ultrascan 17HS Trinitron Color Monitor from Dell.

VideoCard: Number Nine Virge 3D PCI Video Board with 2mB EDO DRAM.

Quote:>From www.nine.com I got the following info: Virge(s325) ---> chipset

9FX Reality 332 ---> card's name

And I got the following error message when I do startx: S3: Unknown S3
chipset: chip_id=0x31e1 rev.61
None of the configured devices were detected.

Does the latest version of slackware support this card?

Can anyone help, please?

Thank you

Ted Wang

Hi,
I don't have an S3 Virge but did some research for a friend who did.
The answer is no way right now. But don't give up, from all that I read,
there is an X server coming for the virge. A commercial version is ready
now for ~$100.00 but I'd wait. Check out www.dejanews.com (a news search
engine). here you will  find the answer.
Linux is well worth the wait. I was there once when the
S3 first came out and when Diamond cards weren't supported.
Later.

No.  I have a similar problem with my new HP 7270.

However, XFree86 3.2 was just released (10/30).  Quoting from the README:

  1.  What's new in XFree86 3.2

The following items are some of the features that have been added
since XFree86 3.1.2 was released in August 1995:

  ...
     8. A new server (XF86_S3V) for the S3 ViRGE and ViRGE/VX.
  ...

  available via anonymous FTP from:

     o  ftp://ftp.XFree86.org/pub/XFree86

  and the following mirror sites:

     o  North America:

        +  ftp://ftp.rge.com/pub/X/XFree86 (source and binaries)

        +  ftp://ftp.gw.com/pub/unix/XFree86 (source and NetBSD
           binaries)

        +  ftp://ftp.cs.umn.edu/pub/XFree86 (source and binaries)

        +  ftp://despair.capecod.net/pub/XFree86 (Linux, NetBSD and
           FreeBSD binaries)

     o  Europe:

I've got the N9 virge; I installed 3.2, and ..... nothing.  The VGA16
setup program work, but the server won't come up.  So, it may not be
quite as easy as we all hoped.  It is beta software, so I'm not
complaining.

If anyone gets the virge running satisfactorily, please drop us all an
update.

thanks,
tom

I got it working without any sweat.  Running it at 1280x1024x8bpp and
1024x768x16bpp.  I could XF86Setup working, though.  I had to use
xf86config and just select it from there.  I haven't run into any bugs,
yet, and the server seems to be pretty much there (except ctrl-alt-bkspace
doesn't want to work.  I have dontzap commented out in XF86Config, but
that doesn't help one way or the other. *shrug*)
