Is it possible to connect a dumb terminal up to a Linux box (i.e. a vt100
or better terminal such as a WYSE)?

Does this have to be connected via an ethernet or a serial line?

How is all this set-up (which files do I have to edit?)

Also, where can one buy a cheap second-hand terminal (UK only)?

Yes, it is.  In fact, in the newest kernels you can even use one as your
console (at least that is what I understand).

Serial line.

For the entire scoop you probably will need to look in the Serial Howto.
When I added my Hewlett Packard 700/32 to my machine I only needed to add
a line to /etc/inittab

# I added this
S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty cua1

From what I understand the cua1 should actually be ttyS1, but since cua1
works (for now), I haven't changed it.

That I couldn't tell you (as I live in Pocatello, Idaho, USA).  I picked
mine up from an employer. They were throwing them away.  I imagine that it
shouldn't be too hard to find one.
