pppd problems after kernel rebuild

Post by Scott Fag » Fri, 29 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I started with linux 1.2.13, went to 1.3.20 with no problems and then
tried out 2.0.25

When i went to 2.0.25 ppp stopped working. Whenever i try to start up
the pppd, i get a 'Sorry - PPP not available on this system' (or
something)

BUT if i do a lsmod just after that message, it says ppp.o and slhc.o
have been load. lsmod before hand doesn't list them.  (i think that's
them, i'm using NT at the mo' cause i can't get linux to work)

Did i muck up the kernel make config? Is something not installed in the
right spot? do i need to get a new copy of pppd?

This is bugging me as i use linux almost exclusively for dialing my ISP,
and no it's useless to me...

heeeelp!

I had the same problem.  If you had the same problem as me, then the
problem is not with how you built your kernel.  Your kernel and its
modules are just fine.

The problem is that you are running an older version of the 'pppd'
program.  The 'pppd' program is kernel-dependant.  If you are running
an older version of 'pppd', then it was never designed to understand
the fact that the new kernel's PPP is in a module.

Did you install the upgrade fully from a CD or did you do it from
a download?  Even if you did it from a full CD, you might still have
this problem:

The old pppd was stored in the /usr/lib/ppp directory.
The new pppd is stored in the /usr/sbin directory.

If you have both the new and the old versions installed, then
maybe your $PATH is set up so that it sees the old version
first?  That's what my problem was.  Sigh - that's the 'joy'
of working with the Slackware distribution.

Did you upgrade as per release notes?

Deja vu?  Didn't I see this exact same message last week?

Since I did the Y2K patch for Solaris 2.5 on a Ultra Sparc 1 system,
Informix 7.22 refuses to startup properly.
Anyone experienced a simular problem? Any suggestions?
