Using an External ISDN Modem

Using an External ISDN Modem

Post by Thomas J. Grase » Sat, 08 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Hi.

I'm running RH Linux 4.2 and just purchased and Adtran external ISDN
modem.

My understanding is that if the ISDN modem is external, I just treat it
as a /dev/cua1 device -- there's nothing more I have to do.  Is this
true?

I've been trying to connect to my ISP through either dip or minicom and
haven't been successful with either.  It seems to get connected, but I
never get a login prompt.

Any clues?

Thanks,
Tom

Your right, it is considered, to Linux, as a modem, a fast modem.

I have the exact same ISDN terminal adapter (Adtran XRT)

I'm using diald and ppp-on.
Now depending of your ISP, you will have to logon different ways.

In my case, it is the same as connecting to a RAS server, which means
there is no prompt for login.

What I had to do is to create a small text file with my userid and
password, both in clear and on seperated line. Then I use the option "+ua"
on pppd in order to make the proper credentials exchange with the server.

That's it.

1. problem connecting to the internet using pppd & External ISDN modem

: I am a lame windows user, and I need help with connecting to the
: internet :)

: /etc/ppp/options
: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
: lock
: +pap

The option +pap is obsolete but it is still likely to be cause of PPP
link negotiation failure.  Very few ISPs will authenticate themselves to
their clients and it's doubtful that you are set up to correctly anyway.
