Another SMP questions

Post by Brad Dawso » Tue, 17 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Greetings,

Please excuse the newbie post:  I have read the posts about smp
and unfortunately they don't answer my question.  I have lurked in this
group for a couple days and I have not seen my question come up so I
thought I would post.  As you can tell I am new to Linux so any help would
be greatly appreciated.

I currently have a dual p-166 system running on 4.2 with smp.  I
want to move up to 5.0 (Red-hat) but I don't have the slightest idea how
to set up smp support.  Does Linux 5.0 have an option for smp support
during the set up?  If not, do I need to compile the first kernel and then
recompile with smp?  I don't have any idea how to go about this.  I am
sure this is a basic question but I have not seen any documentation that I
can make use of and I probably don't know what questions to ask to get the
correct documentation.  If anyone can't point me to a url that has a step
by step procedure for this or a detailed explanation of the process it
would be greatly appreciated.  I *don't* want to go back to a Microsoft
OS, Windows seems dead now that I have some time with Linux.

Many Thanks in Advance,
-Brad

Another SMP questions

Here's a helpful URL:
 http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html

 cd /usr/src/linux
 vi Makefile
 uncomment SMP =1
compile the kernel (see ch4 above).

 Warning:
I had to remove SMP support on a server that we set up.  We
were running raid5 on it, so I think that the combination of
the two was bad, but the server kept locking up.  We had to
reboot several times until I finally decided to remove SMP,
and it stopped locking up.  When raid 5 matures a little,
I will probably try it again.

 Hope this helps.

 Bill

1. General SMP Questions

Just set up my first SMP machine with 4.0. Very easy, and seems to be
running just fine. I have some questions related to working with an SMP
kernel, however.
TOP doesn't seem to understand the SMP. Is is only showing me 1
processor, or is is actually averaging in the two? Is there a utility
that will let me monitor processor usage for both processors?
I guess if I knew of a good utility I wouldn't have to ask any other
questions, as I'd be able to watch the system and learn for myself. I'm
curious about balancing between the two processors. Will the kernel move
some processes from one processor to another if processor A gets high
utilization while processor B is idle? With a threaded program (such as
MySQL) will the kernel distribute the threads between the two processors
or will it all run on one?
Just curious, and excited to put this machine to work and see what it's
capable of!

TIA,
Bill
