RedHat 5.1 new user question about X11

Post by Bill Princ » Sat, 12 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I have the Official RedHat 5.1 and have installed it on my cyrix 166 with 65
megs of ram and a 1.2 MB ide hard drive.  The HD is on a slide tray and
boots as the only drive. I swap drives to use winblows95. The install went
well and finished fine. I only (so far !) had a problem when I tried to
startx.  I got the following:
-------------------------------
(--) trident chipset version 0xd3 (tgui96xx)
(--) svga bios reports clock control bits 0x0
(--) detected a trident 9680
(--) revision 1
(--) using trident programmable clocks
(--) chipset: tgui9680
(--) videoram 2048k
(**) svga: using 8pp, depth 8, color weight: 666
(--) max allowed dot-clock : 135.000 MHZ
(--) svga: there is no mode definition named "1024x768"
(--) removing "1024x768" from list of valid modes
(--) there is no definition named "1280x1024"

fatal server error:
no valid modes found
can't connect:
errno=111 giving up.

----------------------------------
I assume that like it says I dont have good video modes. Can anyone give me
some clues or even advice about getting x to work? I used the standard RH
install guidlines and did not change from default. I chose a philips monitor
that wasnt exactly my model number too.

But you cannot choose monitors that are not exact matches.
This is one of the best ways to fry your monitor. If your
monitor is not listed, try using the generic monitor.

VERY good advice... but your major problem is that you don't have any
video modes set-up (obvious, right?... that's exactly what it says).
Try reading the XFree86-HOWTO sections on choosing a monitor, horizontal
and vertical sync rates, and............drumroll...........
modelines.... :)

(I hope that didn't sound condescending...It's late and I'm attempting
to be funny :) )

One thing that you should look out for here is a problem I just had.    For
some reason the install program commented out my settings for they
horizontal and vertical resolution for the virtual screen size.    It had
set the virtual screen size to 360 x 320 or some such odd size.    Since all
of my selected resolutions were larger it would tell me "no valid modes
found".    Since this was a 'fresh off the press' driver for the Matrox G200
it had me wondering just what was causing the problem.    Thought for sure
it was a driver problem but the driver was fine, xf86config was screwing up
the XF86Config file.   Manually edited and all is well :)

RedHat 5.1 new user question about X11

Post by Bill Princ » Mon, 14 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I did as you suggested kenneth and it works fine now. But, I don't know how
many colors I have and the desktop seems to go off the screen in ht and
width to at least about 2 or 3 times the actual view on the monitor. This is
annoying to me. I really want 1024x768 and at least 256 colors and no
desktop scrolling up or sideways. I have also noticed that every new time I
startx i get the same default 640x480 screen (with same up and side scroll)
and have to control + to swith over to 1024x768. I never really do know how
many colors are available. any clues or should I just read TF xfree86
manual?? :)

thanks in advance all.

In the file /etc/X11/XF86Config reorder the screen sizesto read from
smallest to largest, X starts with whatever it finds first.

Egads, I can't type without a lot of coffee:

reorder the screen size from largest to smallest.

YES... RTFM!  But...  (Since I'm a nice guy) look at your XF86Config
file in /etc and find the section on display.  Now, I haven't had to
change the file myself lately so your probably going to have to look at
the howto anyway.

You should see something like DEFAULT in your display section for both
screen size and color depth (its in bit depth, not # of colors... 16 is
64k colors, not 16 colors).  This is in the first part of the display
section, you should see a number of 'mode' sections.  You will also find
a line like 'virtual screen size'.  I'm not sure if you can just delete
it (the line) or will have to set it to the size that you want (i.e.,
the default size = virtual size).

Regards,

Ken Litko

P.S.  You can see which modes you have setup correcly by doing C-M-+
(Control-Alt-+), to change modes (and corresponding color depths), this
goes in the order of the mode listing that you have setup.

hope this helps

1. New RedHat User....5.1

hello everyone
recently ive decided to make the jump to redhat linux...(ive used
slackware and caldera before) and im finding it a little hard to get used
to...probably because i am new to the unix/linux world and still have much
reading to do...however i had a couple of questions that i was wondering if
i could get answered here...and ive read most of the faqs and HOWTO's and
really didnt get the answers that i was looking for there...my system is
RedHat5.1 with the 5.2 Powertools (well at least some of it) installed..
the comp's a 486 with 40meg ram installed and here are my questions:
i know that my vid card and monitor can display 24bit color and ive tried
about every server available for the linux installation but i still cannot
get past the 256color barrior...its a cirrus logic card with 1meg vid ram
and an ast monitor....is there anyway i could run enlightnement,
afterstep, fvwm, or heck, even twm in 24bit color?

ive used control panel to configure my isp (ppp) on my box and i cant
login...its worldnet...is there any way that i could configure it?i also
have a windows98 box and it can login fine...it uses a number as the login
name...and i have tried to use both that number and my actual member name
(mistagon) as the login with the password and it just will not let me start
the service...am i doing something wrong?or is there something that i dont
know?

there are probably about 1001 questions that i could think of right now but
those are the ones that i am having the most problems with at the moment...
links, other newsgroups, responses, correspondances, etc. are all very
appreciated
thanks
Curtis
