Total memory reported / memory used

Hello!

I bought a PIII-500 MHz with 128 Mb ram recently.
First, linux said (dmesg, free, cat /proc/meminfo) i only had 64 Mb.

After that, i am passing parameter "mem=128M" to kernel, via LILO and
the system now says i have 128Mb, which seems to be ok, aparently.

My question is: is the system *really* using all 128 Mb, or is it only
"relaying" the information ive passed to it, but in reality, still
using only 64 Mb?

Thanks in advance,
Mrio Gamito

type 'free' and it will tell you how much memory is used

I think the best way is to use top. It also tells you about the swap
file.

1. Total Memory Used and Reported

I recently installed Linux on my sx386-16 with 2 mb of memory.  2048 is the
value reported by the self check and by MSDOS.  When running Linux and typing
'free' I get the following output:

                 total     used     free      shared    buffers
Mem:             1332      1264      68       304         256
Swap:            6104      336      5768

I was wondering where all of the 2048 kb of memory is?

Thanks for any advice in running with such limited resources!
