Red Hat 5.1 installation won't boot off Hard Drive?

Post by Joe Befum » Mon, 19 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I'm a relative beginner at LINUX, however, I have installed it twice before
(once on a laptop) with no problems, so I don't think I did anything totally
dumb.  Followed the book, installed on a fresh system, told it to install
the loader on the Master boot record.  However, when I try to start the
system, I get the following message:

Verifying DMI Pool Data
Not Found on any [active partition] in HDD
Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter

When I insert the rescue disk, the system boots fine.  Everything else
appears to work, so I'm not about to muck around with it until I'm sure I
know what I'm doing, but I would like to know if I screwed something up, or
if this is a know problem.  Hints on how to fix it would also be welcome 8^)

FWIW, this is a CTX box, AMD 300 CPU, 6.6gig hard drive.  Everything else is
pretty much plain vanilla.

Installation is Red Hat 5.1

Thanks.

Joe

Joe,

I believe that you need to use fdisk and activate the boot partition on
your hard drive.

1. RH 5.1 installation won't find hard drives, fails installing LILO

Hello,

    I'm trying to install RH5.1.

When I boot the floppy, the bootup finds both ide drives. Master and
slave. Yet, Disk Druid only sees master. Fdisk only sees master. Yet
when I boot with the 5.0 boot disk, Disk Druid sees both disks.

I purchased both 5.0 and 5.1. So I have both to play with.

Second, when the copying of files is complete, RH wants to install
LILO. It always fails. It also fails trying to make a rescue floppy. No
activity on the floppy.

My next attempts at getting this working are: 1. changing Lzone and
PreComp BIOS settings. I doubt it'll make a difference... 2. Removing
the slave. Then adding it back later.

One stickler I have with the install is that all of these problems
happen AFTER you sit and wait for the files to be copied. I think it
would be a lot better install, if the "error-prone" stuff comes near the
beginning, then, after you're sure everything will be OK, copy the
files. It would be nice to have all the user I/O done up front. Then,
all the disk preparation, including LILO etc. Then "remove boot floppy".
Then copy files. After files are copied, reboot the system. In theory,
you can then leave it unattended while it's doing its stuff.

    Anyway, any ideas?

    Lyndon
