How to Change Screen Refresh Rate?

How can I change the screen refresh rate for my console?

My console now shows ugly 60Hz. I want to set it to something like 85Hz.
My X Window System is already working perfectly with 85Hz.

Thank you,
Omar

Helps if you provide what distro and release level you are using
when you post questions to the news groups (Redhat 6.1, Suse 5.0,..).

That info help us to provide better examples/responses.

Different distros have different commands, files, and links to
files. Even happens between release levels of the same distribution.

Depending on release level
        /etc/X11/XF86Config
        /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
search for VertRefresh

Are you sure, that the refresh rate for my Linux console is set in
X-config-files?

Usually this is set using a utility which each distro includes and installs
as part of installing the operating system  In Mandrake it is XFdrake which
is called by the desktop Control Center when Display is selected.
I think RedHat uses XFConfig but I am not sure aout that

Assuming that your monitor can operate safely at 85 Hz, the refresh rates
can be set manually by editing /etc/X11/XF86Config or possibly XF86Config-4
depending on your distribution and kernel level

See Man XF86Config

You should read up on setting modelines before attempting to manually set
your refresh rates.  A badly configured XFConfig file can damage your
monitor.

What distribution of Linux are you using?

What graphics card and monitor are you using?

Ermmm...he says X is already set up that way. I think he wants the text
console screen adjusted (ie not X!).

If you take a look at a package like 'SVGATextMode' it gives you the
option to change (on the fly) the current text mode of the console (e.g.
number of rows/columns), change the current fonts etc.  It seems to do
this to a large extent by playing with the refresh rates among other
things. Point-in-fact, my console is currently running at a 120Hz refresh
(non-interlaced).. why?  just to see if I could :-)

Andrew.

P.S. If you're going to cross post, please but a 'Followup-to' header in
the message directing replies to one NG... besides, that way you don't
have to look in every group for your replies.

I personally use FBSet (concidering that you have a FB device), although
be forewarned that it is old softwares, therefore some hacking maybe
necessary if you want to run on a newer card.

1. Changing Screen Refresh rate on an Ultra 10

I have a Sun Ultra 10 that I need to change (lower) the refresh rate on if
that's even possible. I'm finding my KVM switch won't always sync
correctly to my monitor when the Ultra 10 is powered up. Tech support
sugested lowering the refresh rate. Is this possible and can it be
maintained after a reboot?
