Best book? Best distribution?

I am looking for recommendations on the best "starter" Linux book, the
best comprehensive reference, and the best distribution.  Any help would
be greatly appreciated.  Also, what is the most current stable kernel?  Is
there a reason why some distributions contain both 1.2.13 and 1.3.15?

Gentle People:

    First, let me thank you all for your
answers to my previous post.

    Now a question: Can any of you recommend
a UNIX Linker Book that covers in detail the
old SunOS 4 "UNIX a.out" Format, (not the current
ELF).

What about "Linkers and Loaders" by John Levine
is it detailed?
