Need help configuring mouse

Post by Joe Brehe » Fri, 15 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Help -

I have a gateway pentium system with a microsoft mouse that connects via
mini-DIN plug. I can't seem to get the mouse working, and I can't seem to
find any documentation mouse configuration in general. I found the busmouse
HOW-TO, but I don't believe this is a bus mouse.

When I run test-mouse, I just get a cursor in the center of the screen.
Moving the mouse, and clicking the buttons has no effect.

Can anyone help?

Thanx, Joe

You're right, a busmouse has it's own proprietary card, usually, and doesn't
use the normal system resources of other mice. What you have is a PS/2
style mouse. Use the PS/2 driver and you should be fine.

You might try getting a minidin to 9pin adapter, one came with the
Kensington mouse-in-a-box.  And plug it into a serial port.
Comset can be used to set the serial ports as required.  This is with
diLinux on a generic 586 by the way.

Sounds like a PS2 mouse to me. Make sure your kernel has PS2 mouse support.
Then if using gpm:

gpm -t ps2

and if you are using X config XF86Config as

Protocol "PS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux"

If you want to use gpm and X windows without removing gpm:

gpm -t ps2 -R

and configure XF86Config as
Protocol "MouseSystems"
Device "/dev/gpmdata"

Pepe,

Sounds like (1) You don't have your swap enabled (check using top &
see how much swap is indicated), or (2) even with the swap you're
running out of space.  You could try shutting down extraneous
processes such as X and retrying, or you could create a swapfile
(gosh, not quite sure I remember the command for that though,
maybe you use mkswap but check before you try, eh?) which you
could enable just for the period of the compile.

A swapfile is like a swap partition only it resides in a file
on your filesystem and is slower.  The advantage of a swapfile
is that you don't need to repartition your filesystem just to
get some more swap.  After you create the swapfile (as I say
I don't remember the command, anybody?), you enable it as you
would a partition using swapon, and hopefully away you go.

I hope this is some help!
