Lilo install BIOS warning

Post by Joha » Tue, 24 Nov 1998 04:00:00

W98 is installed on hda (1st IDE, master), Linux on new, added  hdd (2nd
IDE, slave). Both run fine, but can't get Lilo working off hda mbr.

I set up lilo.conf, run lilo, and get this:

Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible
Added Linux *
Added Windows

On bootup, I get an L followed by 01 01 01 01 01 01 .... (forever) and have
to CtrlAltDelete and boot with the Linux Boot disk, and uninstall Lilo, and
reboot to get to Windows. I believe L 07 07 07 07... has also happened.

Details: It's a new Compaq Presario 5150. I added the second IDE drive and
installed RH5.1 on it. Linux runs great; but would prefer to boot off
harddrive than forver use the RH boot floppy for booting to Linux.

Anything appreciated; I spent a lot of time on dejanews but couldn't find
anything similar. Most posts seem to deal with* on "L" or on "LI". I
have tried with and without "linear".

Also -  it has a PCI modem (Rockwell HCF 56k/v.90) - I assume that's not
supported? (PCI modems)

this worked:
--

boot = /dev/hda
delay=40
disk=/dev/hda
bios=0x80
disk=/dev/hdd
bios=0x81
install = /boot/boot.b
map = /boot/map
prompt
timeout=200
verbose=0
default=linux

other=/dev/hda1
        label=windows
        table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.34-0.6
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hdd1
        append="mem=128M"
        read-only

You have your root linux partiton on the third drive, right?  I would
suggest to make a small 1-2MB file system on hda (the first drive)
and mount if a /boot.  Then make sure that your kernel image (vmlinuz)
is moved to /boot and that /etc/lilo.conf is updated correspondingly.

If you do a fresh redhat install this is very straight forward to do:
just specify the mount point for the small partition on hda as /boot,
and the will be taken care of.

The problem is that anything that needs to be read from disk before linux
gets active need to be located on a disk that can be accessed from BIOS
without any OS support.  As soon as linux is up and running you won't
have any problems accessing the third drive as hdc.

1. LILO warning about BIOS drive access

Hi All,

When I install LILO the following message is printed:

        Installing the Linux Loader ...
        Warning: BIOS drive 0x82 may not be accessible

The warning appears 3 times.  The installation completes,
and I can boot.  However, I'm wondering if this could cause
me problems later.  For instance, I had problems booting the
other day.  I had to mkfs & re-install linux.  Now, I'm having
trouble restoring stuff from tape.  Anyway,  I would appreciate
any information you might have.  Like, how do I figure out which
disk/tape is drive 0x82?  Why would it be unaccessible?  Is a
large file system the problem (4Gb)?  Do I fix this in linux or
in the BIOS setup? ...

My system is a 486/66 VLB with 2 ide disks, 2 scsi disks,
1 scsi floppy, & 1 scsi tape drive & 16Mb ram.

Thanks, Roger
