Red Hat 6.0 doesn't boot!

I have the same exact problem.  (See earlier posts)  I "think" it is a
problem with 6.0.  By any chance do you have a processor other than an
Intel chip?  I use a winchip 200mmx, 5.2 ran fine with the latest
kernel.  I also tried every combination of install I could think of and
it all  ends with loading linux.............
No ctrl alt del - total system lock.  I did try it from a boot disk, it
got a little farther but still a total system lockup.  I'll bet my last
$.58 that it is a bug with rh6.0.
Let me know if you find a fix.

Red Hat 6.0 doesn't boot!

Post by Mian » Mon, 17 May 1999 04:00:00

I have been using RH5.2 for a few months and it has generally been running fine. Actually
installed it 5 times (because of mistakes I made during use!) and each time it installed
and ran fine.

Recently got RH6.0 and it won't boot after supposedly successful installs. I've tried two
new installs and one upgrade from RH5.2

When booting after new installs in gets to 'Loading Linux' and that's it!     -not even
any dots after it such as 'Loading Linux.............'

When booting after the upgrade it gets to 'Loading Linux' and then goes straight to the
next line with an Error message 'Error 0x09'    -and no further - can't even boot from the
rescue disk that was made during the installation.

Does anyone have any ideas???

Mianne.

I am having the same problem.  My machine is a
Pentium 75 upgraded with an IDT WinChip also.  I
believe they changed the way the kernel is
compressed from 2.0.x to 2.2.x.  Something about
BZIP?  I suspect that may be our problem.  If you
hear of a resolution, please send me an e-mail....

Red Hat 6.0 doesn't boot!

I am having the same problem.  I am also using a WinChip 200 Mhz which
I used to upgrade an old Pentium 75.  I noticed if I disable the system
cache the machine will boot.  I have tried using some of the other
kernels available on the RH CD, since RH tries to pick the kernel best
optimized for your CPU.  If I am not mistaken, the compression type
used for the kernel image has been changed between 2.0.x and 2.2.x.  I
believe they are now using BZIP?  This may be the source of our
problems, but I have not been able to find a resolution.  If anyone
knows what the solution to this is, please e-mail me at one of the
addresses below.  Thanks.......

1. Red Hat Linux 6.0 doesn't see my Gateway HD

Hi--I'm a newbie attempting to install Red Hat Linux 6.0 on a new Gateway
PC. I've prepared a Linux ext2 partition on my HD (below the 1024th
cylinder) using PartionMagic. However, when I attempt to install Linux, the
installation program takes me through the first few questions but then says
it can't proceed because it can't find a device to install to. I've got a
20G Ultra ATA HD that uses an Ultra ATA 66 card--could this be causing the
problem? Is it a BIOS setup problem? I've set "Plug and Play OS?" to NO in
the BIOS. Kinda cluless. Would appreciate any help. Thanks :-)
