which video card would be best?

Post by jimme » Sat, 29 May 1999 04:00:00

ok.. after playing with my SiS 6326 (AGP) and having no luck (i'm trying
to
upgrade my XFree86, while also waiting for RH6 which i'm told will
recognize the SiS 6326), i'm thinking of trading the card in for a
different one...
first: am i correct in assuming that the SiS 6326 really isn't the best
card, and i would be better off with something else? i've heard of people
getting it to run xwindows, but with unimpressive resolutions, etc..

second: would you recommend any of the following cards? does xfree pick
them up ok? do you think they're better cards than the sis 6326 agp?
ATI Xpert 98, 8 MB AGP
        4mb Cirrus Logic AGP
        8mb Intel i740 AGP
        4mb ATI Rage II (PCI)

thanks muchly!
jimmer.

After going through 4 PCI cards that did not work, I gave up and bought an
ATI Xpert 98 3D Rage Pro card. Video now, at least, is working fine. Audio
is another story...

I have a PC Chips mobo with integrated SiS 6326 AGP and a simple 15" monitor
running in a perfectly readable 1024x768 resolution on a RH5.2 box :)))

You have to upgrade XFree86 to version 3.3.3 to get support for this chipset.
Check out /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.SiS. It contains info about what
options are important in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file. After you run
xf86config, these options are all commented out in XF86Config. You will have
to uncomment some of them to get X running ok.

Don't know if these videoboards are better than SiS6326 based ones; probably
some of them are...
But I have my SiS 6326 working like a charm without much hassles :)))

hi!
thanks for the info..
one last question..

Quote:> running in a perfectly readable 1024x768 resolution on a RH5.2 box :)))

are you in 8bpp or more? (and is the difference noticeable?)

thanks!
jimmer.

I installed Linux 5.2 this weekend (my first attempt and go with Linux) and
found that my older 4 meg Diamond 3d2000 with the S3 Virge chipset took with
no problems.

I started with #4 -- wasn't supported on RH5.2. Had it exchanged with #1
and it appears flaky (app window sporadically floats off the screen).
Found out later in the manual that X server has problems with some
Mach64 cards!? Wondering which one to pick next?

I have the same card and I am seeing, what appears to be, a random
disappearance of my app win. If yours is working fine is my card
defective or my setup isn't quite right? Anybody else out there with
this card please pitch in your experiences.

1. Best Video Card - Best Sound Card - HELP!!

Your 2 cents worth please!

I want 16/32M AGP graphics with good 3D performance, a TV tuner (I
guess this needs a BT848 or similar), realtime video capture & playback
(some form of MPEG compression?). I don't need Linux support for the TV
or Video right away so long as it's in the pipeline. Am I expecting too
much from one card? Am I better off buying a graphics card and a
seperate TV/Video card - if so, please let me have your recommendations.

I am aware that some graphics card manufacturers have been hostile, or
less than helpful, to the open source community and I would prefer not
to buy their products, given a choice.

Regarding sound cards, most of the advice I have received points to the
sound blaster awe64 or such. What of the SoundBlaster Live! value or
quality clones.

All advice gratefully received.
