    Use the LINEAR keyword in your lilo.conf file, that should help you.

LILO hangs during boot-up

Post by Salman Mugh » Mon, 27 Oct 1997 03:00:00

I'm running into a strange problem.  I've installed lilo
on /dev/hda (MBR) but at the boot time, LILO hangs after
showing "LI" at the screen.  Later, I have to use a bootable
floppy to mount the root partition.  The weird thing is that
if I put this HD in another computer, LILO works fine and
boots up properly.  Anybody out there had similiar problem?
I'll appreciate any help!
Thanks.

From the LILO README (in Slackware, /usr/doc/lilo/README):

   LI   The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
    loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
    geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
    installer.

Basically, given that the thing works fine in another computer, I'd be
tempted to think the the drive setup in BIOS is hosed.

Otherwise, search for 'geometry mismatch' in the README...maybe
something else there you can use.

Good luck,

LILO hangs during boot-up

I have a similar problem.  Only I don't even get the LI letters.

I have Redhat 4.2.  Hardware is a 386 intel w/ 8mb of RAM and IDE
controller
w/ a 500(+-)  mb drive.  I have run Linux (Redhat 4.1) on this machine
before.
But the hard drive is new(used).  Anyway, all I get is "04 " repeating
on the
screen.  I can boot from a floppy, i.e. to install, and the installation
appears
to complete successfully.  You mention the BIOS being "hosed".  I know
my
bios description does not match the actual hard drive, but that didn't
seem
to bother Linux install, fdisk or anything else.  And I did note during
Linux
boot (from floppy) that it correctly read the parameters for the hard
drive.

It is an older BIOS with preset parameters.  It does have some blank
entries
but I can't find anyway to modify these.

If I boot from floppy using the "rescue" command at the lilo prompt,
I can mount the hard drive and view everything that was installed.
However, when I try to create a Linux boot disk, again "04 " repeats
across
the screen.

I consider myself to be maybe one notch above newbie status (I have
another
system with Linux (Redhat 4.2) and Windoze95 working just fine) but this

particular problem has me stumped.  Any help would really be
appreciated!

LILO hangs during boot-up

Post by Christos Vetta » Thu, 30 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Go and edit the file /etc/lilo.conf
there it will write somewhere up after dev/hda something about /dev/fd0,
this you have to change "/dev/hda1" if in that partition you have make
install, then make save, and when exit run "lilo" again, last reboot.

1. Compaq Deskpro: lilo don't work, kernel hangs during boot.

Hello Linuxers!
After I have installed Linux sucessfully on 3 machines and help'd another 4
people to run it I now have my first *REAL* problem.
First, I erased all my SLS disks. So I have SLACKWARE.
I installed Slackware 1.03 (99p12) on a Compaq Deskpro 50M with 20MB-RAM and
a WD 1170 as first and a Conner 30204 as second drive. It's an EISA-bus,
with SMC WD8013 network-card and an ATI-ultra videocard.

I installed slackware over NFS and it installed fine, made a bootdisk and
installs lilo.
When I booting either from floppy or from harddisk (this doesn't matter)
linux hangs after mounting the rootpartition (read-only).
The message 'VFS: mounting root (ext2)' appears, then the kernel hangs.
I tried other kernel-images, no luck.
When I boot from the install-disk, I'm able to mount the partition later by
hand , and reading it without problems.

My other problem:
Lilo can't boot any partition on the second drive. I added following lines
to my /etc/lilo/config:

other=/dev/hdb1
        label=dos
other=/dev/hdb5
        label=os2
other=/dev/hdb3
        label=bootm

The third entry is the OS/2 bootmanager. Booting dos says "No system or disk
error", booting OS/2 hangs, booting the bootmanager produces a short click
from the *floppy* and says 'drive not ready' but no light on my drive.

At home I'm pretty booting DOS from the second Harddrive with the same
slackware. On work I installed another machine over NFS without problems.
