In addition to the other solutions, try

    xterm -e 'telnet romot.machine.name' &

on the local machine instead. Same difference, except that the X
protocol doesn't need to go over the network, and you don't need to open
up your X server to other systems.

I have a list of remote systems under my fvwm popup menu, which do the
-e telnet trick. In combination with .rhosts you have instant access to
other systems via xterms.
