Making Win95 Default in Lilo

Making Win95 Default in Lilo

Post by CM » Thu, 19 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I've successfully installed RedHat 5.0 Linux on my machine
along with Win95 and NT4.0. Everything works fine, however, I can't
figure out how to make Win95 the Default OS that is loaded up first.
When the Lilo prompt comes up when booting, I have to type Win95 to
load the NT Booter(which Linux sees as just DOS),  I then can choose
either Windows 95 or NT, if I don't, Linux is automatically booted. I
would like for the NT Booter(DOS)  to be the automatically booted OS,
and Linux the secondary. I've looked through the how-tos, but couldn't
find anything on this specific plan of mine. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

There should be a file called 'lilo.config' or something to that
effect on your system.  Viewing this file shows the bootable OS's that
lilo has.  The first OS listed in the file is the default one loaded.
Move your win95 settings to the front and it will be the default.
good luck.

/etc/lilo.conf

The first one is only the default if there is no "default=xxxxx"
line in the file.

Don't forget to re-run lilo (the LILO installer) after editing the
file or your edits will have no effect.

Thanks for the corrections. : )

1. lilo : default makes lilo crash

this special lilo works fine for a long time, but recently I installed a
new kernel. If I select this kernel at the lilo-prompt manually I can start
him without any problem.
If I set this kernel as default and wait until lilo boots this kernel at
the lilo-prompt no kernel is booting, but the lilo-menu keeps visible for
hours and I cant do anything but reset the machine.

weird, isnt it ?!

thnx,
peter
