No Boot

No Boot

Post by James Bea » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

hi all,

I installed RH 6.0 on an older 486 that had a bootable DOS on it.
Pretty much a plain vanilla install.  The problem is that it will boot
from the floppy created during install but not directly from the hard
disk, that is with the floppy removed.

I used the Linux fdisk to partition and checked that the first partition
is marked bootable.  Chose to install boot to the MBR.  The lilo.conf
looks ok and running lilo -v looks normal.  It appears that there is no
boot program on the hard disk.  The only thing that looks odd is a
vmlinux... in /boot along with the vmlinuz..., but this seems benign.

In BIOS talk the floppy is "A" and "B" is missing.  The hard disk is the
primary master and an IDE CDROM is the primary slave.  This BIOS allows
the boot order to be either "A,C" or "C,A".  I assume the hard disk is
"C" but neither order works.

confused!!
