Linux on MY LAN DNS Troubles.

Post by Mohamed Devj » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I am quite new to Linux so please bear with me........Ok heres my problem.
I have a Windows 95 box thaat has 2 netcards.  One for cable modem

which is an internet sharing software (invisible proxy) .  I have another
Win95  client on my LAN as well as a Win98 & Redhat 6.1 box.  In the DNS
settings box in Win95 I input the ip address of the Win95 proxy as well as
the clients hostname & my internal domain name.  As you can imagine the the
other Win95 & Win98 clients are able to resolve hostnames no problem and get
on the net.  My Linux box won't for some reason.  I can ping external Ip
address but I can't resolve hostnames.  Any ideas on what i might be doing
wrong.

Linux on MY LAN DNS Troubles.

Hi,

Windows is probably using 'wins' for name resolution.  AFAIK, there's
no support for 'wins-client' in Linux.

Find the IP(s) for the name server(s) on your ISP; put those directly
into the Linux box.

Gary.

1. What relationship between dynamic DNS on net and Local DNS on LAN?

At the moment I have a small LAN connected to a Linux server. The linux
server provides internet access for the LAN by means of a cable modem. I
therefore have a dynamically assigned IP address. I want to be able to
access certains services such as SSH from outside and in order to manage
this it would be easier to use dynamic dns rather then having to phone up
to find out what the current IP address of the server is.

At the moment howerver I run a DNS server for the LAN on the linux box.
It's primary function is to provide a chaching DNS service to the LAN but
it also has a zone for the LAN in which it is the master DNS. Since this
zone is not externally accessable, it is just a domain name I made up. What
changes will I need to make to this setup if I get a proper internet
accessable domain name for the server using dynamic DNS
