pppd fails with: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Post by Don Tvete » Thu, 21 May 1998 04:00:00

18 months ago I managed a ppp connection to a local ISP and it has worked
fine
ever since.  But now I am attempting a connection to unidial.com and I get
this in
the /var/log/messages file:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection Terminated
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean
Problem:  all had bit 7 set to 0

This is Red Hat 4 Linux

Please email even if you post (I am liable to miss posts until I get used to
IE4 under W95).

Thanks,

You need to add the line 'debug' to your options file.  Then you will
find out what is happening to cause LCP timeout.

I made progess in my study of the problem.  By using minicom I found the ISP
was
sending the string: "ascend%".  After a while I figured out it was a command
line
prompt and found I could telnet and ftp from there as well as ask for help.
Unfortunately typing ppp in gives a message like "ppp not authorized or
available
or whatever".  But I can get in by w95 so it knows the secret words.  Does
anybody
out there know the secret words for such a system?  It will free me from
w95, ie4
and outlook express!!!

Thanks,

1. pppd -> LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests ???

It appears that there I am having a problem negotiating.  I get
the following error:
        LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

If someone could point out the problem or tell me where to look
I would greatly appreaciate it.  I have been unable to find a good
expalanation of what is going on in the NAG and the PPP FAQ.
