loadlin vs Win'95

Post by Mike Willia » Fri, 17 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I recently upgraded to Windows '95.  After a couple of useful suggestions
from this group, I managed to get loadlin working, for booting of Linux
from the CONFIG.SYS menu.  The suggestions involved making a couple of
modifications to MSDOS.SYS, ie.

  [Options]
  BootGUI=0
  Logo=0

This working fine for several weeks, but now, it's stopped working!
loadlin gives me the following error:

  Not enough free memory between 90000h and 9ffffh,
  may be you have some zombie programs, try to reboot.
  If this doesn't help, try to find out what driver occupies this space.

I have made no changes whatsoever to loadlin or the Linux kernel.  What
could I have done to Win'95 to have messed up the memory usage like this?

Any clues appreciated.  Please e-mail.

Have a look with mem amd its options or something like mft who occupies that
region.

loadlin vs Win'95

        You may be using Drivespace.  You can look at the Drivespace help
files in order to find out how to load the drivers into high memory.
Off the top of my head, here are the contents of my CONFIG.SYS menu for
Linux:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS  <-- Make sure that this is the right path.
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE
SHELL=H:\LINUX\LOADLIN H:\LINUX\BOOT\1_2_13.KRN root=/dev/hda1 ro hdd=cdrom

        I spoke with the author of Loadlin about and suggested that he
include this information in a future version.
        I hope this helps.

loadlin vs Win'95

Last week I asked about the meaning of this error message

  Not enough free memory between 90000h and 9ffffh,
  may be you have some zombie programs, try to reboot.
  If this doesn't help, try to find out what driver occupies this space.

when using loadlin in conjunction with Win'95.  Thanks to all who replied.
It seems my problem was something to do with DoubleSpace.  After removing
the hidden file C:\DBLSPACE.INI, loadlin works flawlessly again.

Oddly enough, the DBLSPACE driver did not appear when I did a MEM /C, as a
couple of people mentioned it would.

------------------------------

Don't know the solution yet, but the problem shows up after you compress a
Win95 drive.

------------------------------

Well, I've installed Windows 95 today and I've received the same msg.

I tried several things and at least I've found out what causes the
problem.

It is Double Space. You can see DBLSPACE in memory if you do mem /c.
Even if you unmount your compressed drive you still get DBLSPACE
loaded at startup. I had to execute the following commands in order to
remove it from memory:

attrib -s -r -h DBLSPACE.INI
move DBLSPACE.INI DS.INI
attrib -s -r -h DBLSPACE.001
move DBLSPACE.001 DS.001

Afterwards loadlin could load linux without problems.

1. *** lilo won't boot win' 95 ***

Greetings everybody!

Installed linux a couple of weeks ago. I really like the way it works.

I am having a progblem though Windows '95 won't boot up.

The reason being is that I formated the linux drive as a linux file system
and therefore both dos and win'95 won't recognise it anymore.

This puts Windows '95 on a different drive than it should be and when I
try to boot-up it says "Can't find Win.com" among other  stuff.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Mark
