Tips for newbies: Don't cat files named "core"

Post by Red Hac » Wed, 12 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I figured if I'm going to ask newbie questions,
I should give a little back to the group and
contribute what I've learned thus far:

Don't try to print (cat) any files named "core".
This is a core dump and is created when a program
locks/crashes. Printing this file will cause
chaos to your system and to mankind in general.

May seem dumb, but yes, I did do this, once.

This is good advice.  And if "cat core" does screw-up your console
you'll be glad if you've read the FAQ as it tells you how to fix it.

1. Is "sh file" equivalent to "cat file | sh"

I'd like to know if "sh file" is exactly the same as "cat file | sh". If there
is any difference, what is it? I'd like to know that in order to write a
utility program to unshar a bunch of files, passing the lines to sh via a
pipe.
