I also had this same problem on my ppro 180, but I did figure it out. The BIOS
is, apparently, SMP capable and the Mandrake install program installs an SMP
kernel as the default, which causes my single CPU machine to croak. The solution
is to [*] select individual packages during the install, and de-select the SMP
kernel.
