Yamaha OPL3-SAX sound card...

Post by James K. Wigg » Sun, 19 Oct 1997 04:00:00

Folks,

I"ve got a Yamaha OPL3-SAx PNP sound card that I *cannot* get
configured to work properly.  I'm using a slightly updated version of
RedHat 4.1, isapnptools-1.11, and the 2.0.27 kernel on a dual PPro 180
system.  The motherboard is a Tyan 1668D and the rest of the hardware
seems to be working properly.  Has *anyone* gotten a working
isapnp.conf/kernel configuration for this card?  I've been browsing
DejaNews, the Web, and the ISAPNPTOOLS page for the past 6 hours trying
to figure this out.  The documentation for how to set up an isapnp.conf
file is confusing, to say the least.  If anyone else has managed to get
it to work, I'd love to know how.

In case you're curious, the rest of the system includes:

1 2.1 GB Seagate EIDE Disk
1 3.2 GB Quantum Ultra-ATA
1 Matrix Mystique 220 w/4 MB
1 TEAC floppy drive
1 HP Colorado T3000 tape drive
1 6X Mitsumi CD-ROM drive

Other than the sound, it's a great system -- fast as hell, too.
Can't wait to overclock the thing...

regards,
Jim Wiggs

 Hi,

I have a laptop with this card in it and found that the OSS sound driver
works good. It costs $20.00 and is worth it.

> Folks,

Hi Jim,

I have the same problem. I posted a question about it about two weeks
ago and I did not get any responses that helped me.

My system recogninses the card but does not register it as an Audio
device.

Let us know if anyone can solve it for you.

Good luck,
Arik.

I got my roommate's working in Winbloze 95 after three days of wrestling with
it. The manual said the card should be autodetected by windoze, and the install
new hardware window would pop up, but that never happened. Windoze decided it
was a Windoze Sound System Board and a Soundblaster, and an OSS. After removing
those three, then Uninstalling the SAX drivers with its uninstall tool, windoze
finally found the thing at boot. Of course, it finds it EVERY boot now. Works
fine in winbloze, not sure in linux tho.
Just my (somewhat off topic) $.02

Yamaha OPL3-SAX sound card...

I have the same card in a P60 motherboard that absolutely does not support
PNP (sidenote:  it's a neat mboard, was the _original_ Acer P60 shipped
before the FDIV bugfix).  Anyway, I've gotten this card to work for BOTH
95 and Linux.

First, under '95:  the CD that shipped with my card had a directory for
DOS tools, including a file called setupsa.exe.  You can manually change
the card's DMAs, IRQs, etc. with this utility.  After you've jacked around
with it and finally gotten it to save the configuration files, add the
line drive:\path\to\setupsa.exe /s .  On every bootup, it will initialize
the card and then Windoze will be able to correctly recognize and use the
card.

Next, Linux:  I had to recompile the kernel.  ("Everyone join in!
GROAN!")  Use the older sound driver for SoundBlaster boards, with a few
changes:  1) SBPro setup (use the IRQ/DMA from the SoundBlaster section of
setupsa)  2) Yamaha OPL-3 support.  On bootup it should detect the
soundblaster AND the opl-3 and with luck workbone will be happy.

Also, for DOS:  Adlib for the music, SoundBlaster for the rest, works for
WarCraft and ID games.

The trick for me was to use setupsa, obviously.  You may need to set the
slot as non-PNP in your BIOS setup, if possible.  Hope this helps.
