XFree86 problem on a Compaq Armada 1750

Post by Jacques-Olivier Haenn » Thu, 15 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I've tried to install XFree86 on a Compaq Armada 1750, but without
success.  This laptop has a ATI Mach64 LT Rage Pro 2X graphic card, and
a 1024x768 LCD display.  I've tried either the SVGA and the Mach64
driver.  I'm installing RedHat 5.2.

The problem is that some parts of the screen are duplicated, or a large
white line appears on the screen.  I've noticed that if I boot the PC
with an external monitor connected, the X server works fine (when
displaying on the CRT and LCD at the same time).

Any idea, solution ?

Or has someone a XF86Config working for the Armada 1750 ?

Thanks in advance.

Jacques-Olivier

Well marc, the problem is

1. Which newsgroup contains the propper info.  I have the same problem
(Although my screen has a black
border neer the right hand side of the screen) and I have been monitoring the
dev.laptop newgroup without finding solutios
2. You need to know were the old messages are stored (I have just discovered
this group and it contains only 1 reference to the
compaq)

XFree86 problem on a Compaq Armada 1750

Post by mae.. » Mon, 19 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Okay.. heres my thing..

Im running it on a Compaq 5100.. but I got it to work by jumpering the
pins that make it think it has an external monitor connected, and just
synching out and back.

The pins on the 5100 are if you get an external cable, and short pins
2 and 7 on the FAR end of the cable (the monitor end, not the PC end).

IF someone wants to nerd it even further, you could probably figure
out which two you have to jumper at the laptop to do it, by checking
continuity on the cables, or finding a pinout schematic for it.

Anyone have a working XF86Config for this PC? I have a black line and
split screen at the top, and im not quite comfy enough to start
hacking the modelines.
(LCD's are not cheap to replace)

Thanks!

maeryk

I have a Compaq LTE5100 running in 16bpp.. I can mail you the XF86config
if you wish. The refresh is slower than on 8bpp.. but if you use
no-opaque
it's ok. The newest XF86_SVGA supports this laptop.

1. FreeBSD 5.0 boot problems on Compaq Armada 1750

Hi there.

I'm trying to get FreeBSD 5.0 to run on my older Compaq Armada 1750 laptop,
but it refuses to boot. When I boot and it gets to mounting the root image,
it freezes up. It boots fine with FreeBSD 4.3, but It dosen't support the
PCMCIA controller located in the machine, thus no network is awailable on
that version.

Slackware Linux 8.0 works fine, but I'd rather use FreeBSD because of the
stability, and certain security issues(And the posibility to make a minimal
installation and add/compile everything yourself, without having to use
LFS).

Also, I have an old Digital ventures 5133 I've tried to install FreeBSD 5.0,
but it can't use the diskcontroller, it refuses to do so. Linux(Redhat 6.2)
also works quite fine on this machine.

Does anyone have a clue to what I could do to get FreeBSD on my machine, or
am I stuck on Windows/Linux on this hardware?

I didn't think that FreeBSD would be so picky about hardware, but I guess it
is :-(

Regards,
Peter
