Problem with Mandrake 7.2 and Sound [lack thereof]

Post by michael s. jesso » Sat, 24 Feb 2001 20:59:30

I just installed Mandrake 7.2.  Very nice.  But, no sound.  It thinks it
has discovered my sound card and enabled sound for it, as far as I can
tell via drakconf, but it really hasn't.  What confuses me is my old
Redhat 6.0 picked it up and configured for it just fine!!  I thought
Mandrake was based off of Redhat?

I have a Genius SoundMaker 3DJ sound card [Crystal CS4237].

Can anyone help me figure this one out?  OH!  And when I try to switch
the sound card from its selection to other Crystal options, it says "that
option is not supported yet".

Thank you,

Mike

PS - Yes, I checked the "supported hardware list", I sort of assumed it
was incomplete and listed the most well-known cards.  I guess I also
assumed that it would apply the driver that best suited the "generic"
card.

Have you tried running sndconfig from the console?  This took care of my
problem.

Problem with Mandrake 7.2 and Sound [lack thereof]

I have Mandrake 7.2 also and tried RedHat 7. RedHat found my sound card
also. With Mandrake I ran sndconfig and it worked there, but not the midi I
have a crystal 4236/37/38 chipset also. Then when I got out it didn't work.
Then I found an the extra io of 330 was the problem with part of it. I
deleted that and left "options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1" only. That worked
for the sound. I still can't get a audio CD to work or midi.
While on the subject of Mandrake 7.2 I also couldn't access my CDROM,
CD-Writer or Floppy in Desktop or in the file manager.  Mandrake wrote
/mnt/cdrom   /mnt/cdrom2 and /mnt/fd0 at the beginning of the fstab file.
It also wrote fs=iso9660 for the CD's which I had to change to just plan
iso9660. There were several other changes in the fstab I had to make also.
Then rescan my Desktop and it was available there and file manager.
Then I tried to connect to the internet. Well, ppp deamon wasn't loaded. I'm
sorry, but the system came with a LT WinModem. So, since it couldn't detect
the modem it didn't load ppp. Had to install ppp and then the ltmodem5.78
then got connected. But then only with Kppp. GnomePPP won't work.
Got a NetworkEverywhere Ethernet Card also (ie Linksys) NC100. It didn't
detect that either. I can't test out what else it didn't load since it
didn't detect that card either till they install the cable modem next month.
Well, while I am ranting I think I will just put RedHat 7 back on the
computer tomorrow morning. At least I think the basics will work if I
remember right. I have been messing with this Mandrake 7.2 for several days
that I have kindof forgot about RedHat.
I can understand that Linux is still kind of new, but if people with as much
computer knowledge as me has trouble just getting a few basic function that
we have been used to having work. Then how in the #$$% are your normal
everyday Joe's ever going to want to deal with this?  They will stick with
Microsoft!  I tried to get my Dad to install it on his computer when they
came down for a visit and now I am glad he didn't take me up on it.
At least if I have any problems getting RedHat to work tomorrow when I
reinstall it I will be able to get the BASIC functions working, cause I had
to learn them on Mandrake 7.2.

Thanks for letting me Rant. And try the above settings on your sound. Put
them in the modules.conf file.

Problem with Mandrake 7.2 and Sound [lack thereof]

Oh, forgot you might want to make the alias also in there:

alias sound-slot-0 sb

1. Addonics SV750 sound (or lack thereof)

Hi folks,

Anyone had any experience setting up sound with this card (Addonics SV750
16-bit sound Trident 4D-Wave chip).  I've been through the HOWTO and using
sndconfig, the card isn't detected and when I choose a card from the list
and attempt to play a sample, I get a 'device busy' error.  On boot, the
kernel seems to start sound but no results.  Sad eh?
