Installing Ethernet card

Installing Ethernet card

Post by Corrado Bc » Sat, 30 Mar 2002 18:41:45

I've just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my PC.
The problem is that it doesn't recognize my LAN card (in Windows 98 is a
generic NE2000 card).
What I have to do ??

The PC is an old P120Mhz, 32Mb Ram, 4GB HD: it seems to me that Linux is
very slow (5 minutes to open the Help or any other program) compared to
the Win98 also installed (max 30 sec to open the normal software I use).
Is it normal ????

Thanks,
Corrado

Regarding the speed, you should get more memory.  It is cheap nowadays.
Are you running X and a window manager such as KDE or GNOME?  You don't
have enough horsepower or memory for that.  Either use a less demanding
window manager or stick to non-graphical mode.

Try reading http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html.

1. Newbie Installing Ethernet card after inital install

I installed redhat v5.0 but during the installation it would not detect
eth0. The ethernet card is a cheap ne2000 pci card irq=11 io=6200(auto
assigned through the bios). I could change these settings but I'm not
sure what to expect if I did, would probe auto find it?  How do I
install the network card without having to reinstall redhat. I figured
theire must be a way.

Thank in advance
Mark
