Redhat Linux 4.0 - CD-ROM problem

Post by Arun Shastr » Tue, 21 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I've been trying unsuccessfully to install Linux 4.0 on my
Win95 PC using the Linux CDROM, but it just doesn't seem to
recognize or detect the presence of the SONY CDU33A CD player
that I have interfaced via a SoundBlaster 16 bit card.

Linux tech support has been $&*#! in helping me(well, they got
their $49.95 for a slacware, why care?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Some more info is needed.
I am not real sure what type of interface your CD-ROM uses.  It
makes a difference.  The earlyer models of SB-16 used a specail
interface, and the later models had an IDE interface.

If you have the full RedHat setup, the install manual tells you
what you have to enter at the LILO prompt so that Linux will
reconize your CD.

Actualy, this is Linux tech support.  The company that sold you the
CD actualy charged you for the service of putting the programs on
CD, and packaging it all up.  Plus the installation instructions.
Some distributers offer additional support, others do not.

Check their errata page at www.redhat.com, I remember seeing something about a
typo in the append opption that needs to be passed to the kernel via the lilo
prompt.

After you choose your CD type from the menu, don't let it
do auto-detect.  Instead, choose "specify paramters" (I don't
remember exactly what they call it) and where it says
"cdu31a=", change it to "cdu31a_port=".  Then put in your
<address, irq>.

For my system, I had to say "cdu31a_port=0x300,5" for address
300H and irq 5.

When the installing program prompts you for the  I/O  address,
subsitute cdu31a=0xXXXX with cdu31a_port=0xXXXX

1. Redhat 4.0 Installation CD-ROM Problems

Ok, I've got a CDU33A, and have always had my cd working under 3.0.3.
I went to install 4.0 off of the Infomagic Dec 96 set, and the boot kernel
won't recognize my cd drive, no matter what I try.  I've booted normally, and
added the appropriate options when it asked (cdu31a=0x340,0), nothing, I've
tried adding the hardware options when it comes to the boot: prompt, and I
can't get it to recognize my cd.  Any ideas, or is this a bad boot image?  CD
installation worked fine for REdhat 3.0.3.
