Matrox MGA-G100 AGP + Hitachi cm751 + RH5.1

Post by Jari Oksane » Sat, 31 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I didn't pick up my pc components, but this is a pc I got:

video card Matrox MGA G100 AGP (8MB)
video monitor Hitachi cm751, 19", potentially 1600 x 1200

I think this is not a wisely chosen combination to install Linux, but
I've tried. RedHat 5.1 does not support this hardware, and they have no
XFree86 support for this Matrox card. SuSe says it has, and I have
downloaded their xmatrox.tgz and xsuseconfig.tgz files, and installed
them like they advice. However, xstart doesn't start anything. With some
other (RedHat) Matrox drivers, X starts but is completely messed up. Any
hope to make the system work? I mean, the monitor is a bit big to be
used as 24 rows x 80 characters text console (makes me to think
switching back to some other OS...).

cheers, jari oksanen

I have almost the same config (except the monitor is 19" ADI 6P). I
installed the SUSE's xserver from RPMs and it runs just fine in
1280x1024. Don't forget to get their patched xf86config and to setup
your X server with it !!!
I run the console in 80x36 (or something like that...). Just edit
/etc/lilo.conf and add this line at the top:

vga=4
and run lilo. Or change it to vga=ask (hope it's so :) and choose. Just
try man lilo.conf.

That's nice, but the Xserver is more expensive than the Matrox G100
Productiva itself.
I'll better stick with Suse's Xserver, although it's certainly slower.
Sorry.

1. XFree86 for PII-300 with Redhat 5.0 and Matrox MGA-G100 AGP PowerDesk ...

I'm not a complete newbie to linux ... I'm running linuxppc on a PowerPC
7500/100 ... but

This is the first time I've setup linux on a PC and in particular had to
setup XFree86 ...

I was wondering if anyone could help me get the proper Xserver for a
PII-300 with Redhat 5.0 and a Matrox MGA-G100 AGP PowerDesk ... ?

Generic SVGA doesn't seem to work, but that could just be me ...

Any help/docs concerning setting up XFree86 in general and/or concerning
my particular problem would be much appreciated.

Thanx in advance,
-jared
