kernel 2.4.10 comes up as 2.4.5 ???

Post by Eggert Ehmk » Fri, 05 Oct 2001 20:32:05

I upgraded from kernel 2.4.9 to 2.4.10. On one of my machines, it boots as
2.4.5 !!! There was no 2.4.5 installation on the machine before. Even the
modules have been installed in /lib/modules/2.4.5. I used the same procedure
as ever. The machine works fine, however. Any hints ?

I'm using 2.4.10 and it displays 2.4.10 so, check you have a correctly
configure lilo.conf file, the 2.4.10 bzImage is correctly copied to the
/boot directory (or where ever your lilo.conf specifies!), and then execute
the lilo -w command (lilo on it's own works on some systems). Try again.
Hopefully this time it will display 2.4.10.

On my other machines it shows 2.4.10 too.

Have done all that. Lilo is configured correctly and shows 2.4.10 in the
menu. There is no 2.4.5 kernel in /boot. uname -a tells me 2.4.5.
make modules modules_install
created /lib/modules/2.4.5. Guess that cannot happen by a wrong lilo config.
During the modules_install I already watched with amazement the messages: it
was installing ->from<- the 2.4.10 directory ->into<- the 2.4.5 directory.
How can this happen ?

Eggert

In that directory, run "head -4 Makefile".

Check the include file in your source tree:
2.4.10-source-tree/include/linux/version.h.
If it says 2.4.10, you have to report as a kernel bug. However, if it
says 2.4.5 (my guess), the source tree is wrong.

Regards.

What does more /proc/version say?

1. VM: 2.4.10 vs. 2.4.10-ac2 and qsort()

Just rip it off NetBSD and there you go. (FreeBSD's breaks on machines
like SPARC, NetBSD's does not.)
