RH 6.1, Gnome 0.53, can't print - jobs queued, but cannot start daemon

Post by Pete Hur » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello world,

So, I've somehow recently lost the ability to print.
It was working fine under RH 6.1,
then I upgraded to gnome 0.53 (rpms from ftp.gurulabs.com).

Now I get:

lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

lp2 is a local hplj3, and default printer is a network printer.

What gives!?  lpd is running

root       442  0.0  0.4  1136  296 ?        S    09:46   0:00 lpd
root       586  0.0  0.5  1160  356 ?        S    09:46   0:00 [lpd]

Many thanks for hints,

-P.

You know, seing how everyone else here with RH6.1 is having
the same non-detection of /dev/lp 0 - 2, etc, perhaps I was
deluded in thinking I had it working under 6.1 (since I recently
upgraded to 6.1 from 5.2)...

This is really bumming me out, swapping over to NT to print...

What gives?

1. lpr problem: jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

Hi All,

I have strange problem in printing on a network printer. I've
searched the usenet archives and read many complaints about it.
However noone seems to know the exact problem.
The system in the question is a
"Red Hat Linux release 5.0 (Hurricane) Kernel 2.0.32 on an i586"

Let me just copy my screen to present the problem:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
%% lpd daemon is running
[ init.d]# ps aux | grep lpd
root      9585  0.0  0.5   796   352  ?  S   15:27   0:00 /usr/sbin/lpd
root      9587  0.1  0.9   948   592  ?  S   15:27   0:00 /usr/sbin/lpd
root      9590  0.0  0.6   848   364  p4 S   15:28   0:00 grep lpd

[ init.d]# lpq
JetDirect lpd: no entries

[ init.d]# echo "ali" | lpr
lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.

[ init.d]# lpq

robocop.bu.edu: Warning: no daemon present
Rank   Owner      Job  Files                                 Total Size
1st    root       662  (standard input)                      4 bytes

JetDirect lpd: no entries

%% kill the lpd daemon
[ init.d]# kill -9 9585 9587
%% restart the lpd daemon [note lpd start doesn't solve the problem]
[ init.d]# /usr/sbin/lpd
[ init.d]# lpq
JetDirect lpd: no entries
%% NOW IT PRINTS!

[ init.d]# echo "ali" | lpr
lpr: connect: No such file or directory
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
%% NOW IT DOESN'T, we are back to square one
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the relevant excerpt from /etc/printcap
[Yes, myprinter is my default printer]

lp|myprinter:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/myprinter:\
        :mx#0:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=myprinter.bu.edu:\
        :rp=:

The funny thing is that it was working before and now it doesn't. I don't
recall editing anything relevant to the printer. Any help or pointers
will be appreciated.
