new installation gives techno-puke - please help!!!

Most humblest apologies, but here is my pathetic situation:

I am trying to install Linux 2.3.0 on a pentium, here is the config.

P/I-P55TP4 motherboard with 90 MHz chip, Intel triton chipset
850 MB enhanced IDE hard disk
16 MB RAM
Mach 32 video card

After installing the RAMDISK from the color144 diskette, the system dies
giving me a screen full of techno-puke.  I have tried several versions of
Linux and have received the same response most of the time.  I was once able
to run fdisk, but the system soon crapped out with  a "segmentation fault"
message.

I suspected the RAM, but it proved okay after an extensive test from Norton's.
I have also tried fiddling with the BIOS settings especially the plug and play
options, but to no avail.

Has anyone out there tried installing Linux on this type of Pentium system?
I have been successful installing Linux on earlier model Pentiums and
several 486's so you can imagine how annoying this is.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

1. New disk installation--please help.

I just order a new 9 Gb drive to replace the old one on a Sparc20
workstation.  After I replace the drive and reboot the machine, I got the
following error message:

Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package

Can't  open boot device

Since the drive is brand new (not from SUN, but is compatible), I guess
maybe I need to format or label the drive first.   But I do not know how.
Could someone give me some suggestion on how to fix the "problem"? Or give
me some URLs where I could find the info.

Thanks in advance!
