How to use VFAT?

Post by Paul Kinzelma » Sun, 27 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I've got a W98 hard-disk I'd like to access. I notice that W98 seems to
ignore the
type of disk field in the master record because it seems to be garbage
and so Linux
can't mount it. Is it safe to use FDISK to change the type? If so, what
is the proper
file-system type for VFAT? I don't see anything in the list of available
filesystem
types in FDISK. It's a FAT16 long filename disk, not FAT32. Please email
me with
an answer. Thanks!

Paul,

DON'T USE FDISK!!! VFAT may or may not be a supported file system under
linux at this time, don't force the situation by changing the partition
sigature, you will prbably cause more damage than you expect! Check the
kernel file systems support to see if VFAT is supported, if it is NOT
supported, it is not supported!

Remember, Microsoft has a vested interest in foiling our efforts to use
an alternative O/S, so when they come out with the latest "GEE - WHIZ -
BANG - FLAZPZZ" idea, we must try to unwind their latest *.
