INSTALLING: Unable to read /dev/hdb !

Post by jonathan tanne » Thu, 16 May 1996 04:00:00

I recently got hold of Linux v2.0, not having much room on my C: drive I
purchased & installed a Western Digital HD. The new drive works
perfectly fine in DOS and Windows95. I have no problem using it. BUT...

I can not install Linux as the Linux fdisk program does not detect the
new drive.

From LILO boot;

boot: ramdisk hd=1651,1663
Loading ramdisk....
.
.
Partition check
hda: hda1, hda2, hda3, hda4

but no hdb!

Nor is my CDROM detected although I suspect that this is due to the
fact that I am using the 'bare' boot disk.

If I run LILO without any extra options I get two errors for both hard
drives:
hd.c ST-506 interface disk with more than 16 heads detected probably...
(disk1: cyl=827, sec=63, head=32)
hd.c ST-506 interface disk with more than 16 heads detected probably...
(disk0: cyl=825, sec=63, head=32)

So I therefore know that LILO can detected them but does not know how to
used the WD. It only knows how to use hda with help from the 'ramdrive
hd' option.

If I continue with the installation inwhich I have specified the hda
parameters I find that Linux fdisk can repartition /dev/hda.
Although it can not partition /dev/hdb ie.

fdisk /dev/hdb   results in the message
Unable to read /dev/hdb

Can help me? I'm lost as to what to do!

Harware Specification:
DX66 VL-BUS
AMIBIOS 1993

Hard Drives: (Both on primary port/ on same cable)
        Conner CFS850A
Western Digital AC2850 (set to slave)

I have not found any jumper settings on the conner drive to see
if it is set to slave or otherwise. I am assuming it is somehow set to
master by default.

CDROM NEC CDR 272 (set to slave) connected to secondary port

BIOS Setup data
c: cyl=1651, hd=16, sec=63, size=852
d: cyl=1654, hd=16, sec=63, size=854

Sure.  Just stop trying to give incorrect parameters to the kernel.

Specifically, delete the "hd=1651,1663" crap.

1. unable to read /dev/hdb installing problem Linux slackware 2.01

Resently i did buy the book " Het Linux handboek " together with 2 cd-roms.

I did try to install Linux Slackware 2.01.

I have a IBM Aptiva model 931 (SL-H) with 16 mb ram and 1 gb harddisk.

On the harddisk i have installed DOS, Window 3.1 and OS/2 on one big parition.
I have not installed OS2 bootmanager.

To install Linux i did buy a second harddisk also 1 gb large.
With teh dos fdisk i did create 3 partitions for linux on the second harddisk.

To install Linux I created:
 - bootdisk (mitsumi file on it)
 - rootdisk (color144 on it)

After booting i did type: ramdisk hd=2100,16,63
One of the messages was: 0x300,10: init failed. No mcd device at 0x300
irq 10.

Then i did login as root.
The next thing to do was using Linux fdisk to change the "id code" of the
partions.

fdisk /dev/hdb does not work.
I get the message "unable to read /dev/hdb".

Can somebody please help me?
