Installing LILO from Windows...

Post by I wish I knew every thi » Sat, 06 Oct 2001 08:15:01

First off before everyone posts saying 'Use a linux boot disk' let me
start by saying, 'I do not have a floppy disk drive', I won't
elaborate on why here just let me say I think floppies are/or should
be obsolete by now.

Secondly, I use linux, I am not a 'guru', I can get around, and I am
to the point where learning new tricks is possible, but Ive
never changed lilo settings, never recompiled my kernal...  I hope
what I just said (or typed) made sense. :)

System:
1ghz Athlon
ASUS A7V M.B.
Promise ATA 100 Controller
Matrox Millennium G450
WinTV Go.
Windows 98 installed on /dev/hde (at least I think its e) (2
partitions)
Linux RedHat 7.1 Installed<?> /dev/hdg (Master Hard Drive/ Secondary
ATA Controller)

Background:
I have been running 98 on this machine for a while; I have been
running two computers on with linux and this one.  I decided I wanted
to dual boot this system to play with linux using the dual monitors,
and the TV card (which apparently I should be able to get to work in
RH7.1)

I ran the red hat setup from the CD, the install went fine (Except
that after I tested the X display settings the monitors would go blank
and never turn back on). I setup lilo (in the install) to install
itself to /dex/hde.  After the install was done I rebooted the
computer

The Problem:
After the machine got thru the boot process LI appeared
on the screen and the system just sat there.  I (being a college
student with assignments due everyday) panicked and popped I the win98
disk and reinstalled the dos mbr (the old fdisk /mbr trick).

What Now?
I figure there are a few thing I can do, unfortunately I dont
feel like or dont know how to do them.

The presumed easiest fix would be to find a linux boot CD that I could
pop in and run the lilo setup (which I dont know how to run).
Or I could reinstalled Linux again and hope it works this time. And
finally I could install linux again and install lilo to the linux hard
drive and use a different boot loader. (Bootmaster, or BootMagic)

**Sorry about being so long winded**

Would have been damned easy now.

Can your BIOS boot from there?
If not, your attempts wil remain to fail, untill you place a /boot partition
on
a bootable disc

Should be possible indeed

X can be setup after the install too..

This is damned unreadable, but I suppose LI appeared?
try the lba32 keyword in lilo.conf, and specify the bios disc numbering.

If you need more info, go find lilo's User_Guide.ps
It's all in there.

you where left with no other choice.
Even without a panick you probably would have done this.

Perhaps loadlin.exe can be of some assistance here.

reinstalling will most likely give the same result.
