Help: Problems with DIP

Post by Donnie Grim » Sun, 25 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I'm trying to set-up SLIP for dial-in using dip-3.3.7o on a Red Hat Linux
(3.0.3) machine upgraded to kernel 2.0.14. When I connect to the RH machine
with a client and run diplogin, it tells me the IP address, netmask, etc,
but I cannot ping other machines.

Additionally, I get an error
ERROR 'sl0' busy and not MOD_IN_USE
message on the console of the server.

I've never had any problems with DIP on Slackware running 1.2.x kernels, and
I'm stumped.

Please help.

Thanks,

Donnie Grimes

PS: E-mail if you can.

Just a thought... are you using a kernel with IP forwarding/gatewaying enabled?
The distribution kernel I tried was Not.  I had exactly the same probs,
until I re-compiled with the switch on.    You must also tell your client
machine to use the logged-in one as a gateway
(  /sbin/route add default gw 123.456.78.90  )    -I'm sure you know this anyway.

1. Help- problems using dip with $local set to an ip

I'm using dip under linux 1.3.3.
I go through a net provider who normally provides a dynamic ip address for its
slip accounts. HOWEVER, one can , for example, specify 'cslip <slip ip>'
to get  a 'quasi-fixed' ip address (this ip is out of their dialup pool).

My hostname is vulcan, vulcan's ip is 172.16.1.1 .

Running dip:
...
get $remote<slip ip>
get $local <slip ip>
default
...

ifconfig shows sl0 <slip ip> pointopoint <slip ip> mask 255.255.255.0
(as it should)
and everything works correctly.

NOW, the problem:
When I try:
...
get $remote <slip ip>
get $local vulcan
default
...

, ifconfig shows sl0 172.16.1.1 pointopoint <slip ip> mask 255.255.0.0.
However, when I try to ping something outside, there is no response. (but NO
network unreachable error, either)
I can ping vulcan. I can NOT ping <slip ip>; that just sits too.

ifconfig eth0 is also 172.16.1.1 . (there is no network connected, though)

Can anyone clue me into the problem?

Thanks in advance

Dave Neel
